Scientific Name - Apios americana
Plant Description - Summer flowers that grow on vines in consistently moist soil and morning sun to shade. The vines can grow up to 10' and will die back to the ground in winter, regrowing the next year. This plant is a vigorous nitrogen fixer and will spread. They grow naturally along streams in moist soil.
NOTE: The edible tubers are sweet, similar to sweet potatoes when cooked. Seed pods are also edible, and can be used similarly to peas and beans. However, a low percentage of the population will react to eating groundnuts. Typically the reaction is gastrointestinal issues. Avoid eating groundnuts if you are allergic to latex. Cooking methods may affect digestibility, and groundnuts should never be eaten raw. If groundnuts are new to you then begin with small serving sizes.
This plant is native to other regions within Ontario, including Bruce County but is not native to the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula according to the Vascular Plant List Bruce & Grey: Compendium, 2023.
